Proper oral hygiene is essential. to prevent pulpitis and other diseases of the teeth and mouth. Teeth should be brushed at least three times a day, and cleaning should be thorough. Each tooth should be brushed, including its inner surface. The tongue should be brushed as well. Brush gently, otherwise tooth enamel can be damaged.
Toothbrushes should have short handles and medium-grade, rounded bristles. Brushes should be replaced every two months.
Toothpaste should contain fluoride. Fluoride strengthens the enamel and helps prevent caries. The toothpaste should not be too abrasive, because it can damage the teeth's enamel.
Dental floss should be used regularly. Various types of floss are available; the unwaxed kind is the most common. Waxed floss is recommended for people with fillings, and the spongy type is indicated for children.
Mouthwash containing anti-plaque agents can also be used. These products rinse spaces that a toothbrush can't reach. Plaque-disclosing tablets or liquids composed of food coloring may also be used to reveal any plaque missed by brushing.
Regular visits to a dentist are another essential part of good oral hygiene and should be done at least twice a year.
