The tension-type headache is the most common type and affects about 75% of headache sufferers. Nearly 90% of adults have experienced at least one episode of this type of headache at some point in their lives. The condition is caused by contraction of the neck and shoulder muscles and feels like a tight band around the head.

This type of headache generally affects women more often than men, especially after prolonged sitting with poor posture. It also has a greater tendency to affect people who are constantly worried or stressed.
Tension-type headaches can be episodic or chronic in nature. With the episodic type, attacks reoccur at least 15 days a month and may last between half an hour to 1 week. With the chronic type, pain is present at least 6 months over the course of a year. Headaches resulting from cervical (neck-based) arthritis fall into this category. In some individuals, tension-type headache alternates with migraine, and becomes evident between migraine attacks.
